Welcome to St. Barnabas Church in Bexhill

St. Barnabas stands within Catholic tradition of the Church of England. Our south coast town of Bexhill-on-Sea has a special affection for St Barnabas Church. Located in the centre of town, its spacious and interior architecture has been the centre of social and spiritual events for over 130 years.

In 1891, the church was built to be at the centre of Bexhill life, with clergy and people maintaining a Christian mission and regular services in the heart of town.

This exceptional building, designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield, has entered into an exciting new phase in its life with social events. The size and acoustics of the church are an asset which enables the building to be used regularly as a music venue for concerts and music performances.

Acts 2:42-46 - "Believers make sure to eat meals together, and make sure to pray together with glad and sincere hearts."

Joseph was a Jew born in Cyprus who sold his property to give the proceeds to the Apostles. In return, they gave him the name Barnabas to live amongst an early Christian community. What strikes me time and time again is the passion of people culminating in recent history with the construction of this marvellous building. It's my passion to see this church used for its original purpose long-term—bringing people together through their individual passions.

Fr. Martin Harper.

130 years of community spirit

The word Church doesn't signify a building, but signifies a gathering of people. Over time, Christians built grand buildings as a means to gather and worship. The history of St Barnabas started with a community need for a place of worship, followed by supporting many facilities as part of the church's outreach - something that continues today.
